HoldTheSpot

The whole thing, explained

How HoldTheSpot works

A public board of numbered spots. You pay to hold one. Anyone can pay more to take it from you — and when they do, most of your money comes straight back, plus a cut of what they paid.

1. Claiming a spot

Every board is a fixed list of numbered spots — 50 on the Worldwide board, 25 on each country board. A spot shows your business name, a one-line description, your logo and a link to your site.

An open spot costs the board's starting price. A spot someone already holds costs at least their price plus a raise — 10% or $5, whichever is larger. You can always bid more than the minimum, and it is often worth it: the next person has to beat your number.

We don't take payment online. You send an enquiry with your details and bid, and we confirm the spot and arrange payment with you directly. Send an enquiry →

2. How ranking works

The board is ordered by what each business is currently paying, highest first. Pay the most and you sit at the top, with the three leaders shown in larger cards.

Your spot number is separate — it is your address on the board, not your position. Spot #40 paying more than spot #1 will outrank it. That is deliberate: rank should be earned continuously, not owned by whoever arrived first.

3. Where your money goes

Every payment splits in two the moment it clears: a 15% platform fee we keep, and a 85% deposit that is yours to get back.

You payFee (15%)Refundable deposit
$25$3.75$21.25
$50$7.50$42.50
$100$15$85

The fee is what pays for running the board. The deposit is not ours — we hold it for as long as you hold the spot, and it is never used to pay anyone else.

4. What happens when you are outbid

Your deposit returns as site credit the instant their payment clears. No claim form, no waiting period, no email to write.

On top of that you get an appreciation share: 50% of the platform fee paid by whoever bumped you. The more they paid, the more you get.

Worked example — you claim at $100

  • You pay $100: $15 fee, $85 refundable deposit.
  • Someone takes it at $150 → you get back $96.25 ($85 deposit + $11.25 share).
  • Someone takes it at $250 instead → you get back $103.75. That is more than you paid.

Break-even is $200 — double what you paid. Above that, holding the spot made you money.

The share is funded from the incoming fee and nothing else — never from another holder's deposit. That is why we can pay it instantly and always honour it.

Site credit never expires and spends like cash on any board. It sits on your dashboard with a full ledger of every movement.

5. Rounds and the Hall of Fame

Each board runs in 30-day rounds, with a countdown on the board. Whoever is holding a spot when the round closes is listed permanently in the Hall of Fame — and forfeits their deposit. That is the trade: a permanent public record in exchange for the money.

Prefer not to risk it? Get outbid before the round closes and your deposit comes back in full. When a round ends, every spot resets to the starting price and a new round begins.

No last-second sniping. A claim in the final 5 minutes pushes the deadline out by another 5, so you always get a chance to respond.

6. What a spot actually gets you

  • Traffic. Your link is one tap from the board and from your own spot page. Every click is counted and reported back to you.
  • A page of your own. Each spot has a permanent public page with your description and link, plus a category listing people browse.
  • An embeddable badge. A live “#3 on HoldTheSpot” badge for your own site that updates as your rank changes.
  • Most of your money back. 85% is refundable, and the appreciation share can put you ahead.

One thing we will not claim: listing links are nofollow and route through a counted redirect, so they send you visitors, not search-ranking credit. Paid links that pass ranking signals breach Google's link-spam policy and can penalise both sites. We would rather send you traffic than a penalty.

7. What is not allowed

  • Adult content, gambling, and anything unlawful.
  • Link shorteners, chat invites, and redirects that hide the destination.
  • Impersonating a person or company you do not represent.
  • Malware, phishing, and deceptive download prompts.

Submissions are screened automatically and reviewed by hand. If we remove your listing for something we should have caught, you get a full refund — fee included.
